East Tyrol has the densest network of mountain shelters in the Alps – 650 of them all told, and with their paths they serve as destinations, intermediate stops or starting points for mountain hikes. The mountain scenery in East Tyrol is as varied as any you will find anywhere. It includes the highest peaks in the Austrian central Alps in the Hohe Tauern National Park and also the massifs of the mountains between the Isel and the Drau and the steep faces of the Lienz Dolomites.
