LET IT SNOW!
In the East Tyrol region there are 5 ski areas, 2 of which – Zettersfeld and the World Cup venue at Hochstein – are in Lienz itself. If you feel like trying out the other ski areas you can easily drive there within about three-quarters of an hour (or take the ski bus). The East Tyrol ski pass is valid not only in East Tyrol but also on the Möll valley glacier and in the Ankogel area. The waiting times at the lifts are still short in East Tyrol and the tickets reasonable.
Skiing

Should you feel like exploring the other ski areas in the region you can reach them all easily by car (or take the ski shuttle) within three quarters of an hour at most.

Lienz ski area
Zettersfeld & Hochstein
Lienz offers diverse and attractive winter sports facilities. A courtesy ski shuttle transports the skiers to the bottom station of the Zettersfeld gondola lift which takes you up to the "sun roof" of Lienz, where you have family-friendly ski runs, or to Hochstein, the World Cup piste that demands more from the skier.
In the ski kindergarten (www.skischule-lienz.at) on Zettersfeld the kiddies learn incredibly quickly and are soon racing faster than their parents. For snowboarders there are designated runs with varying degrees of difficulty and lots of jibs.
St. Jakob im Defereggental ski area
Brunnalm
Snow from November until April. In East Tyrol's St. Jakob im Defereggental that is by no means a fantasy.
Snowboarders too can find all they could possibly wish for here: a terrain park with halfpipe, jumps, and, of course, a mega groovy atmosphere.
Sillian ski area
Thurntaler
The Thurntaler ski area (2,407m elevation) with 50 km of pistes of varying degrees of difficulty guarantees snow on the Außervillgraten side thanks to the ultramodern snow-making facilities and a detachable 4-seater chairlift. The two downhill runs into Sillian (11 km) and Außervillgraten (8 km) present certain challenges to the skiers. Hardly any wait at the lifts, even in the peak season.
Kals-Matrei ski area
Großglockner Resort
The new Kals-Matrei Großglockner Resort is considered one of the finest areas in the Alps.
The best view of the ski area and the Großglockner can be had from the Adler Lounge, the highest point in the area. After having enjoyed a day's skiing you can choose how you would like to get back down to the bottom station. Those who can't get enough can select the downhill run to Kals or Matrei. Less strenuous is the journey down into the valley with the gondola lift.
Möll Valley glacier ski area

With its 9 ropeways and lifts the Möll Valley glacier can be skied more or less all year round.
In the summer months there are likely to be 3 pistes available for skiing - depending on the snow and weather conditions.
Ankogel region
The tradition-steeped Alpine skiing mountain of Ankogel has become the freeride destination for insiders - no wonder, with the deep snow glistening on the slopes high above Mallnitz, the pearl of the National Park.
