Skiing

LET IT SNOW!
In the East Tyrol region there are 5 ski areas, 2 of which – Zettersfeld and the World Cup venue at Hochstein – are in Lienz itself. If you feel like trying out the other ski areas you can easily drive there within about three-quarters of an hour (or take the ski bus). The East Tyrol ski pass is valid not only in East Tyrol but also on the Möll valley glacier and in the Ankogel area. The waiting times at the lifts are still short in East Tyrol and the tickets reasonable.

For family members and friends who are not into Alpine skiing there are a few other ways to have a good time here in East Tyrol. Look out for our offers for cross-country skiers, tobogganers and backcountry skiers.
The Dolomites capital: Lienz has a wide and attractive range of things to do in winter. The complimentary ski bus takes you either to the Zettersfeld bottom station, from where you travel up in the gondola to Lienz’s sun paradise with its family-friendly pistes, or to Hochstein, the World Cup ski run for the more expert skier. In the Zettersfeld ski kindergarten the kiddies soon learn the basics and before long are leaving their parents way behind them.

For the snowboarders there are designated areas with varying degrees of difficulty and various obstacles.

Defereggen valley: snow from November until April. In East Tyrol’s St. Jakob im Defereggental that is not a dream.
Snowboarders too have everything they could possibly want: half-pipe, high jump, fun park, not to forget the “groovy” atmosphere!

Großglockner Resort:
This new resort in Kals/Matrei has been described as one of the loveliest areas in the Alps. The fantastic spot with its myriad of mountains covering the ranges of Glockner, Schober and Granatspitz casts an immediate spell over its visitors.

Hochpustertal: With East Tyrol’s most up-to-date snowmaking facilities and a detachable 4-seater chairlift the Thurntaler ski area (2,407m above sea level) provides towards Außervillgraten 50km of runs with snow reliability and varying degrees of difficulty. The two downhills to Sillian (11km) and Außervillgraten (km) are quite demanding for the skier. Hardly any waits even in the peak season.
